Elon Musk recently announced that the White House DOGE office will cut nearly $150 billion in spending for the 2026 fiscal year, a significant decrease from his previous statement of cutting almost $1 trillion. This latest revision comes as Musk’s time as a special government employee is nearing its end, with his service requirement set to expire by late May.
Musk stated that the expected savings will result in better services for American citizens and attributed it to reduction of waste and fraud. However, his previous promises have not always translated into reality, including his 2016 promise of remotely summoning a Tesla from across the country within two years, which remains unfeasible.
The White House DOGE office has begun to fade from headlines as President Trump’s administration focuses on other issues such as tariffs and immigration reform. Musk’s involvement with the office has also become increasingly unpopular, with his high-profile role in the administration contributing to a significant decline in his national popularity.
It remains to be seen whether the revised spending goal will be met or if it will be another instance of Musk making sweeping promises that do not materialize.
