Elon Musk’s social media platform X has been criticized for supporting far-right German party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has seen historic gains in the country’s recent election. AfD, an extreme right-wing party, came in second with 20% of the vote, its best results since its founding just over a decade ago.
Critics have labeled AfD as “racist” and “anti-democracy,” citing inflammatory statements and Islamophobic rhetoric. The party has also been accused of echoing Nazi messaging, including downplaying Germany’s Nazi past.
Elon Musk has openly endorsed AfD, stating that only the party can save Germany. He has also picked up on their anti-Islamic talking points in his posts. German regulators have investigated Musk for election interference after a conversation with AfD leader Alice Weidel on X.
In contrast, Vice President JD Vance did not meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and instead aligned himself with Weidel at the Munich Security Conference. This move has deepened the Trump administration’s rift with European allies.
