Musk’s Flagship AI Model Grok 3 Still MIA Amid Scaled Back Expectations

Elon Musk’s flagship AI model, Grok 3, is still missing its promised launch window, joining a growing list of models that failed to meet their deadlines. Last summer, Musk predicted Grok 3 would arrive by the end of 2024, but as of January 2, there’s no sign of it.

Musk had stated that Grok 3, which can analyze images and respond to questions, would be a “major leap forward” for his company xAI. However, an intermediate model, “Grok 2.5,” may land first. This is not the first time Musk has set an unrealistic goal, with previous predictions like this often missing the mark.

The delay in Grok 3’s launch is part of a growing trend among AI companies. Anthropic, for example, scrapped plans to release its next-gen model, Claude 3.5 Opus, after deciding it didn’t make economic sense. Google and OpenAI have also faced setbacks with their flagship models.

This could be evidence that current AI scaling laws are running into limitations. Traditional methods of increasing model capabilities through massive computing power and larger data sets have led to diminishing returns in each generation. Companies like xAI may need to explore alternative techniques.

Musk acknowledged this in an interview, saying “Hopefully” Grok 3 would be state-of-the-art, but also accepting the possibility that he might fail. The delay adds to evidence that conventional AI training approaches are reaching a plateau.
