Muslim Member Steps Down from Anti-Israel Commission Amid Zionism Accusations

A Muslim member of the US Religious Liberties Commission has quit her position after claiming it was hijacked by a “Zionist political agenda.” Sameerah Munshi, a recent Brown University graduate and former director of the Coalition of Virtue, announced her resignation in a letter posted on Substack. She cited the dismissal of commissioner Carrie Prejean Boller, who spoke out against Israel and Zionism, as the reason for her departure.

Munshi was praised by the Council on American-Islamic Relations for her “courage” in standing up for religious freedom. However, the council also criticized the commission’s purpose, saying it now seems to protect Israel from criticism rather than protecting religious liberties for Americans.

Munshi had been a vocal supporter of Prejean Boller and was aligned with her on issues related to Israel. The two women had pushed for “fair witnesses” to be included in hearings, including left-wing Israeli academic Miko Peled and anti-Zionist rabbi Yaakov Shapiro. Munshi’s resignation comes amid growing tensions between the US government and Iran.

The controversy surrounding the commission has raised questions about the role of religious freedom in American politics and the impact of extremist ideologies on public discourse.
