Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises Amid Ongoing Crisis

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Southeast Asia on March 28, causing widespread destruction and loss of life in Myanmar and Thailand. The death toll in Myanmar has risen to 3,354, with 220 people still missing, according to state media. In Thailand, at least 23 people have died, mostly from a collapsed high-rise building under construction.

Rescue efforts are ongoing in both countries, with China and Russia sending aid and disaster-response teams. However, the US has been slow to respond, despite sending rescue crews to other countries. The absence of US assistance is linked to President Trump’s administration’s efforts to dismantle the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Search-and-rescue operations continue in both Myanmar and Thailand, as the crisis situation evolves.
