A woman was rescued from the rubble of a hotel in Myanmar three days after a massive earthquake that killed around 2,000 people. The rescue operation took 60 hours and involved Chinese, Russian, and local teams.
The 7.7-magnitude quake struck near Mandalay, which is located at the epicenter of the disaster. In Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, emergency crews are searching for 76 people believed to be trapped under the rubble of an under-construction skyscraper that collapsed.
Thailand has reported 18 confirmed deaths, but the death toll could rise without further rescues. Myanmar’s official death toll is at least 1,700, with reports suggesting it may have reached 2,028.
India, China, Thailand, and several other countries are providing relief aid to Myanmar, which is already facing a civil war that erupted after a military coup in 2021. The United States has pledged $2 million in humanitarian assistance.
Rescuers are working against time to find more survivors, with the Thai government saying it will continue searching for people even if the conventional “window” for finding them alive has passed. A dog sniffer is being used to try to pinpoint the locations of potential survivors at the collapsed skyscraper site.
