Four years since its coup, Myanmar’s military regime continues to wreak havoc on the country and its people. The junta’s escalating violence has resulted in human rights abuses, sexual and gender-based violence, and systematic persecution of minority groups. Civilians are being killed, schools and markets destroyed, and medical facilities targeted.
Humanitarian needs have skyrocketed, with over 19 million people in need of assistance, and an estimated 15.2 million facing food insecurity. The conflict has displaced over 3.5 million internally, with many more fleeing to neighboring countries due to rising transnational crime.
The international community must act now to end the violence and support a peaceful transition. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations Special Envoys have played a crucial role in addressing the crisis. We urge the Myanmar military regime to immediately de-escalate violence, release political prisoners, and engage in dialogue with all stakeholders.
Accountability for atrocities committed must be ensured, and human rights safeguarded. The international community must continue to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2669 (2022) and stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar as they seek a future built on inclusivity, peace, and prosperity.
