Myanmar Military Extends Humanitarian Crisis Amid Ceasefire

Myanmar’s ongoing military operations have continued to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the country, despite a declared ceasefire following last month’s devastating earthquake. The military has launched over 120 attacks since the quake, with most involving aerial and artillery strikes in areas already impacted by the disaster.

The attacks have resulted in numerous indiscriminate strikes that breach international humanitarian law, causing further suffering for civilians. Local community responses have been crucial in search and rescue efforts and meeting basic needs, particularly in Sagaing region.

As Myanmar enters its traditional Thingyan festival season, there is a growing need for collective assistance to those in greatest need. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights calls on the military to announce an amnesty for detainees, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint, who have been incarcerated since February 2021.

The international community must step up efforts to support local communities and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those affected by the crisis. The military’s continued operations are a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to alleviate suffering in Myanmar.
