Astronomers have discovered a mysterious black hole behaving strangely. The supermassive 1ES 1927+654 has been sending out X-ray flashes at an unprecedented rate, increasing from once every 18 minutes to every seven minutes over the last two years.
This phenomenon has never been seen before in a normal black hole. Scientists are baffled and unsure why it’s happening. The most likely explanation is that a spinning white dwarf is hovering near the edge of the black hole, sending out gravitational waves.
The discovery was published in the journal Nature, shedding new light on extreme black holes. If confirmed, this finding could reveal objects can survive close to an event horizon for extended periods.
