Astronomers have discovered a galaxy in an empty region of the universe that appears to be bursting with primordial stars, offering a potential glimpse into the earliest moments of the cosmos. This finding could provide evidence for the existence of population III stars, which are believed to have formed shortly after the Big Bang and were previously thought to remain unseen.
The James Webb Space Telescope has enabled scientists to peer back in time to near the beginning of the universe, but direct observations of these elusive stars have proven elusive. Population III stars, comprised mostly of hydrogen, would have been forged in the early universe and lack the heavier elements produced by older stars’ deaths and supernovae explosions.
