Mysterious Red Halo Spotted Over Italian Town Again

A rare and mysterious phenomenon has been spotted over a small town in Italy for the second time in three years. A halo of red light, measuring 200 km across, was captured by nature photographer Valter Binotto on November 17th. The strange glow is caused by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from powerful lightning strikes, known as an ELVE or Transient Luminous Event (TLE). These events are extremely rare and short-lived, lasting only a millisecond.

The phenomenon occurs when the EMP hits Earth’s ionosphere, marking the spot where the lightning bolt struck. NASA categorizes TLEs as part of this type of event, which is characterized by colourful, bright flashes that thunderstorms generate above the clouds. The red coloration is due to the interaction with nitrogen in the upper atmosphere.

This sighting is not related to extraterrestrial beings, but rather a natural occurrence caused by powerful lightning strikes. The previous sighting in March 2023 was at the same location, Possagno, Italy, and this second instance highlights the rarity of such events.
