Mysterious ‘Skull’ Rock Found by NASA Rover on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has discovered a peculiar rock in the Port Anson region of the Jezero Crater, which scientists have nicknamed “Skull Hill.” The dark-colored rock stands out due to its angular shape and pitted texture. While the origin of Skull Hill is unclear, scientists believe it may be one of several “floats” that were transported from elsewhere on Mars.

These rocks are thought to have formed when Martian rivers and lakes existed billions of years ago. As water receded, softer materials eroded, leaving the more resilient rocks perched on the Martian soil. The pits on Skull Hill may have formed through erosion or impact from wind-borne particles.

Analysis of the rock’s chemical composition suggests it doesn’t match that of typical meteorites. Alternatively, the dark tone could be due to volcanic origin, with minerals like olivine and pyroxene giving rocks their characteristic color.

The discovery is part of Perseverance’s ongoing search for signs of ancient life on Mars. The rover has collected samples, analyzed seven others in detail, and zapped 83 more with its laser for remote study. Scientists are eager to get the samples back to Earth to determine if life ever existed on Mars.
