A mysterious virus outbreak is spreading rapidly in China, with reports suggesting it’s “worse than COVID-19.” The human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has led to a surge in hospitalizations, causing packed-out hospitals and fuelling fears of a second global pandemic.
According to Weibo users, cases of respiratory illness have surged over the last month, with patients between 50 and 60 years old testing positive for the virus before developing pneumonia. The virus shares symptoms with COVID-19, including congestion, fever, and persistent coughs.
HMPV is a common respiratory illness that becomes more prevalent at certain times of the year. While most cases are mild, it can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and other health complications, particularly for the elderly and immunocompromised.
Chinese health officials have remained tight-lipped on confirmed cases and deaths linked to HMPV, but researchers claim case numbers are on the decline. The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that the upward trend in HMPV cases is “within the range expected for this time of year.”
Dr. Andrew Catchpole from hVIVO notes that HMPV is not considered a pandemic virus due to its gradual mutation and similarity to flu. Pandemics occur when a new, entirely different virus enters the human population.
The UK Health and Security Agency has reported a rise in HMPV cases in the UK, but officials say the numbers are usual for this time of year and don’t pose a significant public health risk.
