A nightclub fire in eastern North Macedonia’s town of Kocani killed 59 people and injured over 155 on Sunday. The blaze, triggered by fireworks during a concert, has left the nation reeling. Authorities have launched an investigation and arrested more than 20 suspects, including the club owner, organizer, and security personnel.
The fire occurred at Club Pulse, where popular hip-hop duo DNK was performing. One of the singers, Andrej Gjorgjieski, died while the other, Vladimir Blazev, was injured. The incident has sparked widespread grief in North Macedonia, with hundreds gathering for a memorial ceremony in Skopje.
President Gordana Siljanovska has announced a seven-day mourning period and urged the government to prioritize the lives of young people over profit. Authorities have identified several fire safety breaches, including insufficient extinguishers, emergency exits, and no fireworks license.
The country is offering support to those affected, with several patients in critical condition being transferred to hospitals abroad. The incident has also drawn condolences from European countries.
