Nagasaki marks 80 years since the atomic bombings, with the mayor warning that the world could see a devastating attack again. Approximately 2,600 people from over 90 countries attended a memorial event at Nagasaki Peace Park on Saturday, where Mayor Shiro Suzuki called for global action against nuclear weapons.
Suzuki, whose parents survived the 1945 attack, addressed the crowd and said that conflicts around the world are intensifying, putting humanity in an existential crisis. He emphasized the need to abolish nuclear weapons and urged leaders to take specific action to achieve this goal.
The mayor noted that the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is crucial in determining the fate of humanity. Suzuki expressed his condolences for the victims of war and pledged to continue Nagasaki’s duty to relay the memories of the atomic bombing, which should be passed down to future generations.
Suzuki concluded by declaring that Nagasaki aims to become the last atomic bombing site and will work with global citizens to achieve the abolition of nuclear weapons and everlasting world peace.
