Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and a team they were part of – the gold medal-winning 2008 US Olympic men’s basketball team – are among the finalists for this year’s Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class. Other notable nominees include women’s basketball legends Sue Bird, Maya Moore, and Sylvia Fowles.
Anthony, a 10-time NBA All-Star, is on the 10th all-time scoring list with 28,289 points. He won a national championship in 2003 with Syracuse. Howard, an eight-time All-NBA selection, was known for his defensive prowess, winning three straight Defensive Player of the Year awards.
The 2008 Olympic team, which also included Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron James, helped US basketball regain its top spot internationally after a bronze medal at the 2004 Games. Other notable nominees include coaches Billy Donovan and Mark Few, as well as women’s basketball pioneers like Molly Bolin.
The finalists will be voted on by a panel of 24 anonymous voters, with candidates needing to receive votes from at least 18 panelists to gain election into the Hall of Fame. The 2025 class will be announced on April 5 in San Antonio during the NCAA men’s Final Four, with enshrinement weekend set for September 5-6.
