Major studios have largely relegated comedy to TV and streaming in the post-pandemic era, but The Naked Gun reboot has proven that laughter can still thrive in theaters.
Starring Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the film’s spirit – rapid-fire gags, goofy slapstick, and non-sequitur silliness – is remarkably well-captured. Neeson’s take on the bumbling hero pays homage to Leslie Nielsen’s iconic character, with Paul Walter Hauser delivering a strong supporting performance as his partner.
The movie’s winks at current headlines are numerous, from Drebin’s body camera gag to a quick reference to O.J. Simpson. Pamela Anderson shines in her role as crime novelist Beth Davenport, and the film’s humor is well-balanced, even when it sends up its own absurdity.
In contrast, Freakier Friday fails to recapture the magic of its 2003 predecessor. The sequel’s convoluted setup and supernatural shenanigans result in a messy, over-the-top comedy that struggles to find its footing. Lindsay Lohan returns as Anna Coleman, bringing her usual sharp wit, but even she can’t elevate the film’s tone.
A well-crafted comedy like The Naked Gun is a rare treat in today’s cinematic landscape. Meanwhile, Freakier Friday serves as a reminder that some sequels are better left unmade.
