Narwhals, Arctic whales famous for their long tusks, have been the subject of mystery for centuries. Recent drone footage has uncovered what these unique creatures use their tusks for beyond attracting mates. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University and Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans collaborated with Inuit communities to film narwhal behavior using drones.
The study captured 17 distinct behaviors, including hunting techniques, environmental exploration, and play. The most significant discovery was that narwhals use their tusks to hunt Arctic char fish by hitting them with great force, stunning them and potentially killing them. Scientists also observed narwhals using their tusks to forage for food, explore their surroundings, and even engage in playful behavior.
Researchers found evidence of “tusking” behavior, a ritualistic action where two or more narwhals raise their tusks to assess potential opponents or display qualities to mates. However, the footage revealed that narwhal tusks have other functions, including foraging, exploration, and play.
The study suggests that narwhals may use their tusks to detect changes in water temperature and salinity, aiding navigation and hunting efforts. In one surprising moment, researchers observed three narwhals interacting with a fish without eating it – nudging, pushing, and examining it out of curiosity.
This unique study provides new insights into narwhal behavior and highlights the importance of studying these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.
