NASA astronaut Don Pettit is set to return to Earth this Saturday night after a four-time space traveler’s stay on the International Space Station. The 69-year-old will mark his 70th birthday on Sunday.
Pettit holds several notable titles – he invented the Capillary Beverage, Space Cup, or Zero-G cup, an object patented in space that makes drinking beverages easier in microgravity conditions. He is also a celebrated astrophotographer who has captured unique views of the cosmos from space.
During an interview with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in April, Pettit discussed his photography, stating that he aims to show an Earth-centric perspective different from those seen on our planet. “Earth is amazingly beautiful when your feet are firmly planted on the ground,” he said. “It’s hard to say what is more beautiful – space or Earth.”
Pettit shoots photos from the cupola, a favorite spot among crew members due to its seven windows that offer breathtaking views of Earth. His images showcase his unique perspective as an orbital resident, leaving viewers wondering about the beauty of life in space.
