A NASA astronaut was taken to the hospital for an undisclosed medical issue after returning from a nearly eight-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The astronaut, whose name has not been released due to patient privacy concerns, remains in stable condition at the hospital as a precautionary measure.
The astronaut’s journey back home was delayed by issues with Boeing’s new Starliner capsule and Hurricane Milton. Despite receiving routine medical checks, the medical issue arose soon after splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. The other three astronauts on board have since been discharged and returned to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Astronauts often struggle to readjust to gravity after prolonged periods in space. Initially scheduled to return two months ago, their homecoming was pushed back due to various challenges. SpaceX launched a new crew of four astronauts in March, which included Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps, and Alexander Grebenkin.
Their replacements will stay on the ISS until February, as the space station has returned to its normal crew size of seven after months of overflow.
