NASA astronaut Jonny Kim, along with two cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS) on April 8. The three-person crew spent three hours in space before landing safely. This marks Kim’s first spaceflight, having been selected as an astronaut in 2017.
Kim will be involved in research subjects including material flammability testing and new space technology demonstrations. He will join Expedition 72 and 73 crew members already on the ISS, who will spend eight months in space before returning to Earth in December.
As a Navy SEAL and dual naval aviator, Kim brings diverse skills to the agency. His crewmates include Ryzhikov, an experienced cosmonaut, and Zubritsky, another seasoned cosmonaut. The trio will conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations to prepare for future space missions and benefit people on Earth.
The arrival of Kim and his crewmates increases the ISS population to 10, at least temporarily. NASA astronaut Don Pettit and Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner are scheduled to leave the ISS on April 19.
