A video of the aurora captured by NASA astronaut Don Petit from the International Space Station (ISS) has gone viral, leaving many people in awe, but also raising questions about its authenticity. The 3-minute video shows a mesmerizing display of dark green hues dancing above the Earth’s surface.
The ISS is designed to orbit around the planet at an altitude of approximately 250 miles, making it difficult for astronauts to capture footage of auroras that are typically seen from space. However, Petit’s video appears to show the ISS flying close to the Earth, sparking doubts among some viewers who claim it looks “fake” or created using artificial intelligence.
Aurora experts explain that the natural light display is caused by charged particles from solar activities interacting with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. The aurora borealis (Northern Lights) occurs near the North Pole, while the aurora australis (Southern Lights) appears near the South Pole.
Petit, a NASA astronaut since 1996, is currently aboard the ISS conducting science experiments alongside two cosmonauts. His video has sparked a mix of reactions, with some praising its beauty and others questioning its authenticity.
