NASA has released six images of a supermassive black hole located at the center of the galaxy M87. The images were captured using a network of eight radio telescopes spread across the world, forming an Earth-sized telescope.
The black hole is about 6.5 billion times the mass of our Sun and is located approximately 55 million light years from Earth. This image marks the latest in a series of groundbreaking discoveries made by NASA and its Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, which first captured an image of a supermassive black hole in 2019.
Previously, NASA released images of the black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, Sagittarius A*. The M87 black hole is significantly larger, with a mass about 4 million times greater than that of our Sun.
