NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover has taken its first-ever panoramic view of Martian landscapes resembling those in the southwestern United States. The stunning image, captured from Mount Sharp, features the Gale Crater’s rim and a terrain created when an asteroid collided with Mars billions of years ago.
The “mountains” seen in the background are actually the crater’s rim, while the rover is situated on the slopes of Mt. Sharp. NASA adjusted the color to match Earth-like lighting conditions, allowing viewers to imagine the quiet wind or waves of a long-gone lake.
Scientists believe Mount Sharp holds salty minerals left behind by ancient streams and ponds, which dried up billions of years ago. Studying this area may reveal why Mars transitioned from a watery world like Earth to a frozen desert.
