NASA Closes GSFC Buildings, Limiting Access to Food, Exercise, and Visitors

NASA has announced plans to close or commercialize several facilities at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Wallops Facility (WFF), effective October 1, 2025. The closures include the cafeteria, vending services, motor pool services, recreation center, rocket club, visitor center, and dormitory facilities.

The announcement has sparked concern among employees, who will no longer have access to on-center food options or exercise facilities. The closure of the main cafeteria in Building 21 is particularly notable, as it leaves workers without any access to food on-site.

According to a recent memorandum from May 2025, GSFC’s management plans to consolidate and close facilities due to sequestration orders aimed at reducing NASA’s budget for fiscal year 2026. The proposals are currently being reviewed, with proposals due by September 1.

The closure of these facilities is part of a broader effort to reduce costs and improve efficiency within NASA. However, the move has raised concerns among employees about the impact on morale and productivity.
