NASA Discovers Mysterious ‘Spider Egg’ Like Structure on Mars

Scientists studying the Perseverance Mars rover’s findings have discovered an unusual structure resembling hundreds of spider eggs on the Red Planet. The object, named “St. Pauls Bay,” is composed of millimetre-sized dark grey spheres with elongated shapes and angular edges.

NASA confirmed that Perseverance arrived at Broom Point, a region near the Witch Hazel Hill area within the Jezero crater rim, two weeks ago. The rover’s findings were based on observations from orbit, where scientists spotted light-and-dark-toned bands in the area.

During its sampling operations, Perseverance abraded and sampled one of the light-toned beds and discovered the strange texture in a nearby rock. Researchers are now investigating the geological processes that could have created these unique shapes.

This discovery is not the first time unusual structures have been spotted on Mars. The Curiosity rover has observed spherules in Gale crater, while the Opportunity rover found “Martian Blueberries” at Meridiani Planum in 2004.

The Perseverance rover, which landed on February 18, 2021, is equipped with instruments to search for signs of ancient life and collect samples from Martian rocks. The rover’s robotic arm can analyze geological samples from the surface, aiding researchers in understanding Mars’ mysterious structures.
