NASA’s Webb Space Telescope has detected a new, tiny moon orbiting Uranus. Measuring six miles in width, the moon was spotted using the telescope’s near-infrared camera during observations in February. Its faintness and small size are believed to have contributed to it evading detection by Voyager 2 during its flyby nearly 40 years ago.
Uranus has 28 known moons, many of which are smaller and orbit closer to the planet. The discovery brings the total count to 29. Planetary scientist Matthew Tiscareno notes that there may be more small moons waiting to be discovered around Uranus, stating “There’s probably a lot more of them and we just need to keep looking.”
