NASA’s Perseverance rover has made an extraordinary discovery on Mars, uncovering a rock sample with textures unlike anything seen before. The sample, named “Silver Mountain,” holds significant potential to revolutionize scientists’ understanding of the Red Planet.
The rover collected the 2.9cm sample from Blue Hill within Jezero Crater and sealed it in a tube for further analysis on Earth. This is one of dozens of samples being gathered to shed light on Mars’ geological history, climate, and the possibility of past life.
According to NASA, this sample marks an important milestone in the mission to explore Jezero Crater’s geological history. The agency has stated that the rock core could provide critical clues about past water activity and potential habitability on Mars.
The discovery was made using data from previous orbitals, which identified a unique low-calcium pyroxene unit at Shallow Bay-Shoal Brook. This sample is a one-of-a-kind treasure for future Mars Sample Return analyses.
A decision on how to return the samples to Earth has yet to be announced, with options ranging from 2035 to 2039. Former NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the importance of exploring multiple paths forward to minimize costs and schedules.
The Trump administration’s pick to lead NASA, Bill Nelson, has prioritized Mars exploration for the agency going forward.
