NASA Goddard Announces Staff Separation and Institutional Changes Amid Shift to New Priorities

NASA Goddard is experiencing significant changes as the agency shifts towards its new priorities. Recently, Gavin Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, was awarded the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s 2025 Planetary Health Award in recognition of his work on climate change.

The agency is now offering voluntary separation programs to civil servants, including the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP), Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA), and Voluntary Separation Incentive Program (VSIP). These programs will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on July 25, marking the end of the open window.

The president’s budget request has prompted institutional changes, including the impending end of a contract for Veo scooter service. The scooters will be removed after Monday, June 16, and alternative transportation options are being explored.

A center-wide town hall meeting is scheduled for June 16 from 1-2 p.m., where updates on these actions and initiatives will be shared. Additionally, training sessions are available to address questions related to employment outside of Goddard and post-employment training, including some tailored towards scientists.

Colleagues are encouraged to attend the town hall meeting or take advantage of the training sessions, which offer valuable information during this transition period.
