NASA engineers successfully tested the launch control system for the Artemis Moon mission at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The two-part test evaluated the software used to launch the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, as well as its functionality with audio and imagery displays.
The test, conducted in Kennedy’s Launch Control Center, focused on ensuring the software can handle multiple inputs simultaneously. Following software testing, a launch countdown simulation was performed, starting at 2 hours and 30 minutes before liftoff. The simulation included testing the “abort switch,” only accessible to the launch director and assistant launch director.
This test marks the next step in NASA’s preparations for the Artemis II mission, which will be the agency’s first crewed mission under the Artemis campaign. The mission is set to send three NASA astronauts and one Canadian astronaut on a 10-day journey around the Moon.
