NASA has downgraded the chances of a giant space rock striking Earth, but the agency is still planning for its potential impact. Asteroid 2024 YR4 now has a 1.5% probability of hitting our planet, down from 2.6% and initially reported as 1%. If it were to make contact in December 2032, around 110 million people would be at risk.
The asteroid, estimated to be between 130-300 feet wide, is expected to move relatively close to Earth. It’s predicted to enter the atmosphere at speeds of up to 38,000 mph and potentially cause localized destruction. NASA and other space agencies are observing the asteroid using the Webb Space Telescope before it disappears from view in March.
The agency remains cautious due to the asteroid’s high alert level, currently classified as a Level 3 out of 10 on an asteroid hazard scale. While its impact is unlikely, NASA is taking steps to prepare for any eventuality. “No one is panicking, but we’re definitely planning ahead,” said a project manager at the Kennedy Space Center.
The asteroid’s path around the sun will continue to be monitored, and its probability of striking Earth may fluctuate. If it were to approach, it would likely land in the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, or Africa.
