NASA has resolved an issue with its Psyche asteroid mission by switching to a backup propellant line. The problem occurred when a valve in the propellant line malfunctioned, causing pressure to fall and shutting down the spacecraft’s electric thrusters. A solution was found after a May 28 statement revealed that engineers identified a faulty component obstructing the flow of xenon propellant.
NASA adopted one of its previously discussed solutions and is now using the backup line, which has been working successfully. The agency plans to restart the thrusters by mid-June, allowing Psyche to complete its mission to study the metallic asteroid in August 2029. A valve will remain open on the backup line to prevent a similar problem from occurring again.
