NASA to Equip Orion Spacecraft with Laser Communications Terminal

NASA is equipping its Orion spacecraft with a laser communications terminal ahead of the Artemis II mission’s crewed test flight. The system, known as O2O, will enable faster transmission of high-definition pictures and videos from the moon to Earth.

The O2O system will transmit images, videos, procedures, and flight plans between the Orion spacecraft and NASA’s mission control on Earth. It uses laser signals to send data to two ground stations in New Mexico or California, with video quality partly dependent on cloud coverage at these locations.

Developed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory, the O2O system will improve communication capabilities for future lunar missions.
