NASA’s iPhone 17 Pro Captures Stunning Space Photos

NASA’s Artemis II astronauts recently took stunning photographs of Earth from space using an iPhone 17 Pro. This marks the first time a smartphone has been fully qualified for extended orbital use. The specially configured iPhones were used solely for photography and lacked internet and Bluetooth connectivity. The impressive images could potentially revive Apple’s popular ‘Shot on iPhone’ campaign, which was originally conceived to promote the iPhone 6 in 2019.

The astronauts shared two incredible photos of Earth taken from the Orion spacecraft window. The phones were not high-tech cameras but rather standard iPhones. If a contest like the one that ran in 2019 were held today, these photos would likely be among the winners. Apple is said to be happy with the results, despite not being involved in the planning or selection of the phones used on board.

The iPhone 17 Pro’s ability to capture high-quality space images is a significant milestone for smartphones. While iPhones have traveled through space before, this is the first time one has been fully qualified for extended use in orbit.
