NASA’s Perseverance rover has collected a sample from Mars that features textures unlike anything seen before on Earth. The “Silver Mountain” rock core is sealed in a tube for further analysis in labs on our planet. This is the rover’s 26th sample, part of a collection aimed at understanding Mars’ geological history and climate.
The samples will be sent back to Earth between 2035 and 2039, with NASA deliberating on the best method to use. Former Administrator Bill Nelson said pursuing two options would save costs and time compared to previous plans. The agency is currently selecting a method that will ensure significant savings.
Billionaire Jared Isaacman, who leads the agency, has emphasized Mars’ importance in future exploration. The rover, nicknamed “Percy,” recently completed its climb out of Jezero Crater, where it first landed in 2021. It’s now exploring the Northern Rim, visiting four geologic sites and collecting samples.
The rover has traveled over 20 miles, with samples marked on NASA’s interactive map. The mission aims to prepare for sending human explorers to Mars, as stated by Nicky Fox, who leads NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
