NASA’s Rocket Mission to Study Black Auroras in the Northern Lights

NASA is set to launch two advanced rockets into active northern lights to study unique light displays called “black auroras.” The missions aim to understand how electrons interact with Earth’s magnetic field, shedding light on different aurora types. The first rocket will focus on fast-pulsating and flickering auroras, while the second mission targets “black auroras,” which feature dark patches. Both rockets are expected to launch from the Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska during specific timing opportunities. Ground-based cameras and instruments on board will help scientists determine the best launch window based on auroral activity. These studies could enhance our understanding of space weather, a critical factor for protecting satellites and power grids. By studying these phenomena, NASA hopes to improve predictions about extreme space weather events, ensuring greater safety in Earth’s orbit.
