NASCAR Brings Thrill to Chicago’s Streets

Chicago’s Grant Park was abuzz with excitement on Saturday as the third annual NASCAR Street Race kicked off. The event, which features professional drivers racing through downtown streets in the Xfinity Series, drew a large crowd of fans eager to see some of the best drivers compete.

The 50-lap race, won by reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen, was a thrilling display of speed and skill. Van Gisbergen’s victory marked his second win at this year’s event.

On Sunday, the NASCAR Cup Series will take center stage in Grant Park, with Chicago Bulls legend Derrick Rose serving as grand marshal. The 165-lap race promises to be an action-packed event, with drivers navigating a challenging 2.2-mile track that takes them through Grant Park and along DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Drivers have warned of the treacherous nature of the course, which can change layout every year. NASCAR Cup Series driver Chase Briscoe described the track as “extremely treacherous” with no margin for error.

Despite the challenges, drivers like Kyle Larson are relishing the opportunity to compete on this unique and scenic track. The event also offers fans a chance to get behind the wheel of a powerful car through a simulator in the Toyota Racing Experience.

Local fans have been eagerly anticipating the event for years, and many made it out to the race for the third consecutive year. Brian Stanley Sr., from south suburban Flossmoor, said that experiencing the roar of the engines was “really cool” and an unforgettable experience.

The NASCAR Street Race continues through Sunday, with free activities and entertainment available throughout the weekend at Butler Field.
