A simultaneous rise in COVID, flu, Norovirus, and Respiritory Syncytial Virus (RSV) cases has been reported across the US, with Rhode Island’s Department of Health noticing a significant increase in these illnesses. The phenomenon is being referred to as a “Quad-demic.”
Consultant Physician Dr. Carol Martin attributes this surge to growing concerns about preventable ways to stay healthy during peak seasons for RSV and flu. She notes that Norovirus, typically causing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, is exhibiting unusual high cases.
The increase in these illnesses is largely attributed to contact transmission and people gathering. To combat the spread, health experts emphasize the importance of staying home when sick, wearing masks, washing hands frequently with soap and water (not hand sanitizer), and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing into the elbow instead of hands.
Additionally, Dr. Martin advises getting vaccinated against COVID, flu, and RSV for those six months old and above, especially in light of a growing number of unvaccinated individuals this year.
