A landmark treaty aimed at ending the plastic pollution crisis gathered nations in Geneva on Tuesday. The sixth meeting among negotiators hopes to be its last, with powerful oil-producing nations opposing cuts to plastic production.
The treaty aims to address plastic pollution globally and protect ecosystems, human health, and biodiversity. Nations are discussing measures such as reducing plastic production, improving waste management, and redesigning products for recycling.
“We are facing a global crisis,” said Luis Vayas Valdivieso, chair of the negotiating committee. “Plastic pollution is damaging ecosystems, polluting oceans and rivers, and threatening human health.”
The US supports provisions to improve waste collection and management but does not back production caps or bans on plastic products. Saudi Arabia, however, opposes any limits on plastic production.
Nations have agreed on redesigning plastic products for recycling, improving waste management, and addressing toxic chemicals. However, some countries, including India, want to maintain consensus-based decision-making, while others propose opt-in or opt-out provisions.
Environmentalists, businesses, and communities affected by plastic pollution are present in Geneva, pushing for a treaty with binding rules. The negotiations will last 10 days, with the aim of achieving a groundbreaking agreement.
