NATO Coordinates Large-Scale Arm Deliveries to Ukraine

NATO has started coordinating regular deliveries of large weapons packages to Ukraine, with most equipment purchased in the US. The Netherlands and Sweden have announced significant contributions, while Germany is set to deliver two additional Patriot air defense systems soon.

The Nordic countries, including Denmark and Norway, will also provide $500 million worth of military aid, including air defenses, anti-tank weapons, ammunition, and spare parts. Two deliveries are expected this month, with the majority coming from US suppliers.

NATO allies identify Ukraine’s priority needs on the battlefield and supply equipment accordingly. The UN has reported that Russia’s relentless attacks have killed over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians. Air defense systems are in greatest need, as the Russian army makes slow but costly progress along the front line.

European allies and Canada are buying most of their planned equipment from the US due to its greater stocks of ready military materiel and more effective weapons. The Trump administration has not given any arms to Ukraine.

The new deliveries will complement existing pledges of military equipment, with European countries having provided 72 billion euros ($83 billion) worth of aid since February 2022. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans emphasized the importance of US air defense systems and munitions for Ukraine’s defense.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the Netherlands, saying that the deliveries will help protect Ukrainian lives at a critical time when Russia is scaling up its strikes.
