The US State Department has defended NATO members’ decision to increase their defense spending, reaching up to 5% of gross domestic product, following criticism from Russia. The move is seen as a return to the alliance’s original purpose of being a deterrent.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that increased defense spending could lead to the alliance’s collapse. However, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce disagrees, stating that deterrence is NATO’s job and that the alliance is united in its resolve to defend each other against Russia’s perceived threat.
Bruce emphasized that the increase in defense spending is a remarkable step forward for NATO, demonstrating their commitment to defense. She also credited President Trump’s demand with encouraging this move, saying the US supports NATO completely and their role is crucial for a safe and stable Europe.
