Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonia’s airspace without permission and were intercepted by Finnish and Italian jets, the military alliance said. The jets remained in the air for 12 minutes before being escorted out.
Estonia’s government condemned the incursion as “brazen” and called it an example of Russia’s “reckless behaviour”. NATO responded quickly, calling it a demonstration of its ability to defend member states.
This incident is not the first time Russia has violated Estonian airspace. The country has reported four such incidents in 2025, with Russian jets entering from the north east. NATO has been strengthening its presence in the Baltic region in response to rising tensions between Russia and Western countries.
The European Union also condemned Russia’s actions, saying they were “an extremely dangerous provocation”. EU leaders have promised to increase pressure on Russia, calling it a test of the West’s resolve.
