NATO Reaffirms Ukraine Membership Stance Amid US Leadership Remarks

NATO officials have reaffirmed that Ukraine’s membership in the alliance remains unchanged, despite recent remarks from US leadership. According to a NATO spokesperson, who spoke anonymously, nothing has changed in relations between NATO and Ukraine.

The Alliance stressed that its policy towards Ukraine’s future membership remains the same, with no changes announced. In 2019, allies at the Washington summit stated that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is irreversible, a decision still in force today.

NATO Headquarters emphasized that a state’s right to determine its level of aspirations in relations with the alliance is fundamental. This principle applies not only to Ukraine but all nations.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth initially ruled out Ukraine’s joining NATO, followed by US President Donald Trump and his security adviser Mike Waltz making softer statements. However, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has avoided commenting on the issue publicly so far.
