NATO Secretary-General Urges Allies to Shift to “Wartime Mindset”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte urged member countries to shift to a “wartime mindset” amid rising tensions with Russia. In comments after a meeting of alliance defence ministers, Rutte emphasized the need for increased investment in defense spending.

“We are producing more and faster than at any time in decades, but we can and must do more,” Rutte said. He stressed that NATO allies need to work together and “get to the same page” on security issues.

The comments came after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth repeated calls for increased investment by other NATO allies. Canada is among those countries still falling short of the 2% spending target set by the organization.

Rutte also addressed Ukraine, saying that NATO discussed the importance of continued support and reiterated its commitment to helping Ukraine’s security. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed alarm over potential US-Russia negotiations without European involvement.

NATO allies are working together to address security concerns, with UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasizing the need for Ukraine’s voice to be at the heart of any talks.
