Nazis’ Looted Painting Found in Argentine Estate Agent Ad

A 1930s Italian master painting stolen by the Nazis during World War II has been discovered on a website of an estate agent selling a house in Argentina. The painting, “Portrait of a Lady” by Giuseppe Ghislandi, was looted from art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, who helped other Jews escape during the war.

Goudstikker’s collection included over 1,100 works stolen by senior Nazis after his death, including Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. However, one painting, “Portrait of the Contessa Colleoni,” remained missing until now.

The discovery was made when Goudstikker’s daughter-in-law, Marei von Saher, put the house up for sale and an estate agent posted photos of the property online. Investigators from the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands reviewed the images and confirmed it was the genuine painting.

Lawyers for Goudstikker’s estate have vowed to reclaim the artwork, with von Saher stating, “My family aims to bring back every single artwork robbed from Jacques’ collection, and to restore his legacy.”
