NBA guard Terry Rozier is under investigation by federal authorities over allegations that he manipulated his performance in a 2023 game as part of an illegal sports gambling operation. The news was confirmed by the NBA, which stated that it did not find any violation of its rules.
According to reports, Rozier played just nine minutes and scored five points in a March 23, 2023, game against the New Orleans Pelicans. This was unusual given his previous average of 35.3 minutes per contest for the season. The reason cited at the time was a sore right foot.
Rozier’s case is not an isolated incident. Former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2024, and five other men have been arrested and charged as part of the same federal investigation. Porter had previously manipulated his performance multiple times during the 2023-24 season.
Federal authorities believe that some individuals who worked with Porter may also have information on Rozier’s performance, allowing them to place bets on his 2023 game. The Heat and Hornets have referred to the NBA’s statement on the matter. Rozier’s agent has not commented, while a spokesperson for the Charlotte Hornets has not responded to inquiries.
