NBA Skills Challenge Disqualification Shocks Fans and Players Alike

San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul were disqualified from the NBA Skills Challenge after attempting to exploit a loophole in the competition’s rules. The duo, who aimed to test whether a shot actually had to be made at each station, chucked up wild attempts before completing the other portions of the course.

Play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan initially thought their strategy was genius, but fans and the league didn’t agree. After being informed by an official that they were disqualified, Paul attempted to dispute the decision. A video of the incident showed an NBA official presenting Paul with a list of rules.

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell ultimately won the competition alongside Evan Mobley. When asked about Paul and Wembanyama’s strategy, Mitchell described it as both creative and cheating, crediting the Spurs duo for playing to win.
