The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services have confirmed a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1, or bird flu, in a backyard flock in Dare County. This is the first reported positive test result in a backyard flock in the county.
In January, HPAI was discovered at a commercial operation in Hyde County. The state has taken measures to prevent human exposure by working with the affected flock owner to depopulate the flock.
Avian influenza affects most bird species and some animals. Although it can cause illness in humans, the risk remains low due to no reported human-to-human transmission.
Residents can protect themselves and their pets from H5N1 by taking precautions when managing backyard flocks. For more information on avian influenza and how to minimize risk, visit [provided link].
