NC Sees Spike in Flu Cases, High Death Toll Among Vulnerable Groups

North Carolina is battling a significant surge in flu cases, with respiratory illness visits accounting for 19.6% of all emergency room visits as of February 5. The state has reported 117 deaths from the flu this season, with over 90 being among people aged 65 and above.

Local healthcare facilities have seen a decline in COVID-19 and RSV cases but are experiencing a rise in flu cases. Influenza accounts for 60% of all respiratory virus emergency room visits.

The state’s Medical Director at UNC Medical Center, Daniel Park, notes that the current season is similar to pre-pandemic patterns, with a higher amplitude of flu cases this year. He warns that vulnerable populations, such as children under 2 and those over 65 with underlying conditions, are at a higher risk of getting severely ill from the flu.

Recent data shows that lab-confirmed influenza cases have risen significantly, with nearly 400 positive cases in the first week of February compared to less than 100 in January. Hospitalizations for flu have also increased, with WakeMed reporting over 1,000 positive flu tests between Jan. 26 and Feb. 3.

Health experts emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu, which can lower the risk of infection by 50%. This year’s vaccine covers two influenza A viruses and influenza B, and doctors stress that it is crucial for vulnerable populations to receive the vaccine.
