NC Unveils $10M Weatherization Program for Storm-Damaged Homes

North Carolina’s Department of Environmental Quality has launched a $10 million Home Repair Weatherization Readiness Program to help households affected by Hurricane Helene. The program aims to serve over 575 homes in counties damaged by the storm and is part of the state’s comprehensive recovery plan.

The funding will support home repairs for households on the WAP deferral lists, where major repairs or work were not previously eligible. This initiative will drive down utility bills, ensure safer and healthier homes, and reduce carbon emissions.

As part of its recovery efforts, Governor Josh Stein is requesting $13.5 billion from Congress to restore homes, support local government services, and rebuild roads and bridges. The governor’s plea comes as nearly a year has passed since the hurricane struck western North Carolina.
